VMRCVMPlease mark your calendars for the VMRCVM's twentieth Annual Research Symposium which will be held on Friday, November 21, 2008. The event will showcase VMRCVM student and faculty research and will feature keynote speaker Anthony Atala, M.D., the W.H. Boyce Professor and Chair of the Department of Urology and Director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest University.

The VMRCVM has been recently engaged in the process of seeking accreditation from the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC International). We have been formally apprised by AAALAC’s Council on Accreditation that our college has been awarded FULL ACCREDITATION following an extensive evaluation and site visitation conducted last summer. Many thanks to all who played a role in our achievement of this very important designation; and in particular, Dr. Jennie Hodgson for the excellent leadership she brought to this process.

Ashish Ranjan Receives Poster Awards
The Office of Research & Graduate Studies would like to congratulate Ashish Ranjan for being awarded Runner Up in the poster competition at the 24th GSA Annual Research Symposium and 2nd place in the poster competition at the Edward Via Osteopathic College of Medicine Research Recognition Day.
Ashish is a PhD Candidate in Nanomedicine and Drug Delivery in the Department of Large Animal Clinical
Sciences. His major advisor is Dr. Ramanathan Kasimanickam.
Megan Lighty
Megan Lighty Receives Presentation Award
The Office of Research & Graduate Studies would like to congratulate Megan Lighty for being awarded “Best Graduate Student Presentation” at the 80th Northeastern Conference on Avian Diseases held at Penn State.
Megan is a DVM/PhD dual degree candidate in Avian Medicine in the Department of Large Animal
Clinical Sciences. Her major advisor is Dr. Pierson.
David Goodwin
David Goodwin Receives AAVP Award
The Office of Research & Graduate Studies would like to congratulate David Goodwin for being awarded the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists Companion Animal Parasite Council Graduate Student Award in Zoonotic Disease.
David is a PhD candidate in Parasitology in the Department Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology. His major
advisor is Dr. Lindsey.
Naveen Surendran
Naveen Surendran Receives Poster Award
The Office of Research & Graduate Studies would like to congratulate Naveen Surendran for receiving the second place prize for the poster titled 'Interaction of Brucella abortus rough and smooth strains with mouse bone marrow derived dendritic cells' (Authors: N. Surendran, B. Hiltbold, B. Heid, N. Sriranganathan, S. Boyle, S. Witonsky) at the 61st Brucellosis 2008 International Research Conference held in Royal Holloway College, University of London, UK from September 10-13, 2008 in which 300 international delegates from 60 different countries participated.
Naveen is a PhD candidate in Immunology in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences. His major
advisor is Dr. Witonsky.
Presentations by graduate students on current topics in Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences will be given on Tuesdays from 4 to 4:50 pm in the Heritage Room during the fall and spring academic semesters. Faculty are encouraged to attend the seminar regularly to support our trainees in this important aspect of their graduate experience.

The Office of Research & Graduate Studies is very pleased to announce that Dr. X.J. Meng (PI) and his colleagues have been awarded two NIH RO1 grants worth more than $2.8 million. Please see our Research Awards page for more information about the grants and read the full story in Vital Signs. This is a MAJOR accomplishment, especially in this current funding climate. Congratulations to Drs. Meng, Huang, Halibur, Pierson, and LeRoth!
The National Institutes of Health has unveiled plans to enhance and improve its peer review system. These changes in peer review policy are intended to maximize flexibility, remove any unnecessary burden, stimulate new innovation, and promote transformative research.

The Translational Science Institute (TSI) announced three new Team Research pilot grants today. Two grants of $125,000 each were awarded to further develop a team-based, translational idea. One grant of $50,000 was awarded to a new team to help them get established as a working group and to gather pilot data.
The projects funded by the larger Team Science awards include:
Peer reviewers and the TSI Science Council evaluated a total of 37 applications, 13 Team Science proposals and 24 Team Development proposals. The current round of awardees will join 12 other teams working on translational science pilot projects funded by the TSI.
